The commemorative medal is dedicated to the symbol of superhuman courage, strength, indomitable spirit, struggle, heroism and tragedy - the city of Mariupol and the heroes-defenders who defended it from the Russian invaders. Steadfast and determined resistance of the defenders of Mariupol became a serious test for the enemy, took away a significant part of his personnel, weapons and slowed down the advance of Russian troops in other operational directions. The defense of Mariupol and Azovstal, which lasted 86 days, 82 of which were completely surrounded, is one of the most outstanding manifestations of the valor of Ukrainian soldiers in recent history.
On the obverse of the medal is placed: at the top the inscription UKRAINE, under which the small State Coat of Arms of Ukraine; the composition symbolizing the hero city: the facade of the drama theater under the gun (left), the stylized constructions of Azovstal, on which bombs fly (right); on a matte background, mirror inscriptions: CITY/ MARIUPOL/HEROIV/2022, in the spelling of the word "Mariupol" the letter "i" is replaced by a candle as a symbol of memory for the dead, the letter "o" is imitated by a city map created from two profiles - children's and adult , as a symbol of forced deportation; below, on the background of stylized waves, there is an anchor - one of the heraldic elements on the coat of arms of Mariupol, as an image of hope for the liberation and revival of the Ukrainian city; logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine (bottom right).
On the reverse of the medal, on a mirror background, there is an image of a soldier loyal to Ukraine, ready to defend the state to the last; around the warrior are stylized fragments, weapons.
