The appearance of the Samsonov knife was developed by the hunter Mikhail Vladimirovich Andrievsky, the jägermeister of the Imperial Court (Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the Younger). In 1894 he published an article in the journal "Nature and Hunting", entitled "Concerning the newly invented mechanical spear of Prince A. A. Shirinsky-Shikhmatov", which described the history of the creation of Samsonov's knife:
At the end of the 19th century, knives made at the Rogers factory (Joseph Rodgers & Sons Ltd), the largest knife manufacturer in Sheffield, were popular in Russia. It was the Sheffield bowie knife that apparently served as the prototype for the Samsonov knife. In the catalog of the Falkovsky trading house, a similar knife can be found under # 358, it is described as "Rogers' hunting knife-dagger, small in size, but with a wider blade about 5 1/8" long, high quality work. "
In 1880-1920, due to the refusal or misfire of firearms, the hunter was often left alone with the bear during the hunt. In this case, the only means of protection from the animal was the knife, which led to the popularity of the Samsonov-Andrievsky knife. Prince AA Shirinsky-Shikhmatov, a well-known bear-hunter, writes: "Of the hunting knives suitable for bear hunting, in my opinion, the best is the knife made by Samsonov in Tula ..." [6].
In addition to Samsonov, similar knives were produced by the Zlatoust plant and were sold in the St. Petersburg store of the Mining Department of the Ministry of State Property. The firm "Shaf and Sons" in St. Petersburg sold similar knives, possibly from Zlatoust. They were also sold in Moscow trading houses. So, in the catalog of Schmachtenberg (1899) "Tula hunting daggers" are presented. In the catalog of Bergnard and K. - "knives on the bear" No. 347 and No. 348 - the work of Samsonov and "Rogers" (No. 348). According to Roggen's catalog (1913), "massive bear knives" were offered "by numbers - 1, 2 and 3". The length of the blade is indicated in the modern translation in mm: 192.5; 222.7 and 273 mm. The price of Samsonov's knife according to the catalog of Bernhard and Co. was 13 rubles. For comparison, the price of the same Rogers knife was 21 rubles. In the catalog of Falkovsky and Shirokorydenko, the price of a Samsonov knife of a different sample - the Diana model range, depending on the size (number), became 10-16 rubles. In the descriptions of Samsonov's knives, it was indicated that "blades cut coins", a popular advertisement of the quality of cold weapons at that time.
The exact number of knives produced by Samsonov's workshop is unknown, according to some sources - 3356 pieces
