Used on Sailing Ships for Rigging Repair Chinese Hand-Forged Iron Knife  c. 1750--1830
This early 19th Century, iron folding-knife is in good condition for being about 200 years and spent most of its early life on the saltly oceans.
The ancient Chinese were amazing sailors and their ancient tools and wares can be found around the world from the 13 Century on. This fid/knife is all hand crafted by a Chinese blacksmith in the shape of a fish. The pointed "tail" of the fish is actually called a "fid" or "Marlin Spike" and was a nautical tool used to untie stubborn knots, sail & rigging repair, splicing rope, netting repair, and awl. The rivet that holds the blade to the handle was meant to also serve as the fish's eye.
