Description
Normally I undersell things; in this case I can’t be exuberant enough. This is the finest late dirk I have ever seen. I presume from the stamp it is after 1885, but not long after as it doesn’t have the AAA I stamp. Moreover it came from the A.J. Jordan estate. I don’t think it was his personal dirk, I think it was from his store stock, as I had and have some other pieces that were. I could explain at length, and give the provenance, but let’s look at it.It is 10” long, the blade alone is 5 3/8” long. I have seen several other
A. J. Jordan dirks but none of this quality. They are usually small wimpy knives with curved handles. This is finely made, with 5 rivets in the handle. It has evidently never or rarely been used. The only blemishes were probably incurred while sitting around in a museum. I decided some years ago, that it was just too nice to use as a letter opener, but if it doesn’t sell, I might change my mind. At least a decade ago I sold a shell shaped pearl handled pen knife from the same source for several hundred dollars, I think this is a much finer piece.
